FAQ

Here at, On Vinyl, we are enthusiastic about making the Vinyl experience as exciting and fun as we have found it. From the many years of collecting, it has given us an insight to the challenges and joys of being a Vinyl collector. For us, the sound: the bold, soft, nuanced, bassy, the-space-between-notes, the highs and lows, the familiar and unfathomable notes, the wonderous beauty and even the jarring ear-busters, all make up the experience. Nothing gives you quite the same pleasure as listening to it Live, or on Vinyl.

If you are just starting out, then there are a few things to consider:.

Like many things in life, care for them and they last a lifetime. Vinyl records are no different, a well looked after record will provide you many years of enjoyable listening pleasure.

Considered by many as a black art, the trick of tube rolling is simple (and complicated) You can interchange the terms Valve or Tube.

Let’s go back a step. Many valve amplifiers, of which there are many still produced, tend to use Valves/Tubes that are modern manufacture. ‘Ok so surely that’s good?’ Well not always.

The Golden Age of Valve manufacturing was from the 1920’s to the late 60’s, when transistors took over for most electronic products….including amplifiers, TV’s, Computers, Radios, in fact everything.

But the manufacturing, and skill from that earlier age, produced some wonderous Valves. The ‘trick’ with tube rolling is to find a compatible ‘old’ valve to replace the ‘new’. They are the original ‘plug and play’ products, but that’s where it gets complicated. Due to the inherent variation in valves, the result can vary greatly. But that’s where the fun is.

We have a great selection of known products in Valves. Please message us if you a specific request or question.

Japanese Pressings are the highest quality there is.

Condition is a highly subjective, and potentially contentious issue. Debating at length with the casual and serious collector alike.

I like to think that my grading will give a fair description of the album cover, and will concentrate more on how it sounds. How noisy/quiet is the vinyl, and any marks, scratches etc…Not all collectors will accept that, and I am happy to provide further feedback on any of the items online. This grading is by ear and eye.
