Top Five reasons to keep your CD collection.
Our business has over the last couple of years is all about Vinyl, and at the core of our philosophy is ‘How does it sound?’
We still have an extensive Vinyl and CD collection at home, both from years of careful collecting. The comment sometime is ‘We need more space….do you need all of those CD’s?’ It is an extensive collection and does occupy a bit of floorspace.
These are my Top Five reasons for holding onto my Cd collection.
(i) If you have spent many years collecting, then why get rid of them. They are an important part of your life. It’s not like they will go off…. Does the landfill need it?
(ii) As the name suggests, it is compact/ish.
(iii) It is a great value way to explore music currently that may not be on Vinyl. Might be nice to hear the music before shelling out a bit of cash for the Vinyl.
(iv) Quality is generally better than Streaming (despite what you are told) apart from those hideous ‘Five albums in one CD’ sets.
(v) CD players and the disc are great value. How much does your new super- duper Streamer with subscription cost?
(vi) One more------You can hold it in your hand!
The debate here is not about whether vinyl sounds better, but when did you take a serious look at your CD collection? When did you last upgrade the cabling?
CD Players- When buying a new or second-hand player please ensure it has a digital out. (Your existing player may already have one) One of the smartest ways to upgrade is with an external DAC. An inbuilt DAC suffers with some compromises, especially if the player is a few years old.
We transformed our nice Oppo player into a very smart transport by adding a Schiit Gungnir DAC (now deleted from the range). The result was remarkable. Perhaps upgrade the cabling as well? It’s all about the sound.
The CD is now 40+ years old and has been a remarkably successful format. It does have some inherent benefits, less prone to scratching, more temperature tolerant, but can achieve greatness.
So don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater. CD’s will eventually come back in fashion, and you will be secure in the knowledge you decided to hold on to yours.
Please message me if you have any questions or queries.
Many thanks
