Talk Talk’s The Colour of Spring, released in 1986, is one of those albums that quietly changed what a pop record could be. At first listen, it might sound like another sophisticated 1980s album, but spend some time with it and something much deeper starts to emerge.

Led by Mark Hollis, Talk Talk were already moving away from the polished synth-pop sound of their earlier records. On The Colour of Spring, they began bringing together elements of rock, jazz, soul, classical music and electronic sound, creating something far more organic and unpredictable. Songs such as “Life’s What You Make It” and “Living in Another World” gave the album accessible moments, but underneath them was an increasing sense of space, atmosphere and experimentation.

What makes the album particularly important is that it sits right on the edge of Talk Talk’s transformation. It was successful enough to give the band the freedom to take even greater risks, eventually leading to the extraordinary Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock.

There is also something wonderfully timeless about The Colour of Spring. It doesn't feel trapped in 1986. The production, musicianship and mood still sound fresh, while the album rewards repeated listening.

For vinyl collectors, it is more than simply a great 1980s record. It is a fascinating snapshot of a band discovering just how far they could push their music.
