It's hard to get down in a few words the importance of this album, in the landscape of English music.

This album came quietly onto the market in '88 and completely flummoxed all of the record execs. It was so, well not what they expected....but as always the band led by the irrepressible Mark Hollis creating a new musical landscape to dwell within. Mark a focussed, driven artist, creating magic in this album.

 Logically this was a development of their last album, 'The Colour of Spring' which introduced 'space-between-the-notes' more experimental. And a classic in it's own right.

'Spirit of Eden' was a slow burn in the market and it has taken time for it's true magnificence to be discovered. Elements of Jazz, Ambient, Classical, all suffused the music, Densely packed with musical ideas, experimental and joyous.

The original UK releases, and I have a couple, are pressed on noisy vinyl mitigating some of the quiet pieces and squashing the soundstage.

This is an album you must listen to, more than once. It seeps into your brain and attaches the notes, giving you a wholly new musical experience.
