Formed in 1971 by guitarist John McLaughlin, the Mahavishnu Orchestra became a pillar of jazz fusion. Known for high-velocity improvisation and complex time signatures, they blended Indian classical music, rock, and jazz.
The original lineup—McLaughlin, Billy Cobham (drums), Jan Hammer (keyboards), Jerry Goodman (violin), and Rick Laird (bass)—defined the genre with masterpieces like The Inner Mounting Flame and Birds of Fire. Despite internal friction leading to a 1973 split, the band’s technical virtuosity and spiritual intensity set an unmatched standard for musicianship.
