The Associates were a Scottish post-punk and new wave band formed in Dundee in the late 1970s by Billy Mackenzie and Alan Rankine. They became known for their dramatic, experimental sound and Mackenzie’s distinctive wide-ranging vocals. Their music combined art rock, electronic elements, and emotional intensity, setting them apart from many of their contemporaries. The album Sulk is often considered their masterpiece, featuring inventive production and striking songs.
