Formed in 1983 by Steve Bronski, Larry Steinbachek, and Jimmy Somerville, the group paired bright, dance‑driven electronics with openly gay themes at a time when such visibility was rare in mainstream music. Their debut album The Age of Consent featured hits like “Smalltown Boy” and “Why?”, songs that confronted discrimination with emotional clarity and melodic strength. After Somerville’s departure, the band continued with new vocalists, but their early work remains a landmark in LGBTQ+ pop history.
