Released in 1961 as one of the inaugural titles for the Impulse! label, Gil Evans' Out of the Cool is widely regarded by critics as his absolute masterpiece as a bandleader. While Evans was famous for arranging Miles Davis’s most iconic orchestral works, this album captured him with his own working band after a six-week residency at New York’s Jazz Gallery, resulting in a sound that was spontaneous, "loose", and cinematic.
